When we first heard about smart pet feeders, we dismissed them as "for people who travel a lot." We were wrong. After six months of using one daily, we'd never go back.
The case for smart feeders
Portion control that's actually consistent
Eyeballing 1/4 cup twice a day sounds simple. In practice, you overfeed, your partner underfeeds, your in-laws give "treats," and your dog's vet bill goes up. A smart feeder dispenses the exact same amount, every time.
Mornings are no longer chaos
If you've ever been woken up at 5 AM by a cat patting your face, you'll appreciate this. The feeder dispenses breakfast at the time you set. Your cat learns the schedule. Your sleep returns.
You can see them eat
Feeders with built-in cameras let you check in throughout the day. If your pet is off their food, you'll know early — often before symptoms show up elsewhere.
Travel becomes easier (this part is true)
Weekend trips no longer require a pet sitter or boarding. Schedule the meals, watch the camera, peace of mind.
What to look for
- Stainless steel bowls — easier to clean, no plastic taste, doesn't harbor bacteria like cheap plastic does.
- Battery + plug backup — power outages happen. A feeder that only works on AC will fail you exactly when you can't fix it.
- Manual feed button — for when you want to give an extra meal without using the app.
- Camera with two-way audio — talking to your pet from the office is genuinely fun and surprisingly comforting (for both of you).
